Physical Therapy

Prime Sports Med RX offers specialized one-on-one physical therapy appointments for its patients. Each treatment session is for one hour of concentrated work with the patient utilizing manual techniques, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and therapeutic activities. As described before, Prime Sports Med RX believes in the physical therapy, being physical so most treatments begin with hands-on treatments.

During physical therapy, the patient is progressed through exercises in two distinct phases of treatment. First, "From the Floor to Function" which concentrates on gravity eliminated exercises to work on muscle activation, strength, and stability which then progresses towards standing body weight exercises. And secondly, "From Function to Sport" which advances standing body weight exercises towards the individual's expressed goals of functional movement, exercise program or sports.

Prime Sports Med RX foundationally has a sports medicine, physical therapy basis but also has experience working with a variety of other dysfunctions that include orthopedics and some neurological conditions.

Prime Sports Med RX also has experience working with a wide age range of patients that ranges from elementary school aged children to geriatric patients. Conditions treated by Prime Sports Med RX include pain and dysfunction for all the following regions:

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a manual technique used by physical therapists to help reduce the tension in myofascial tissue. A thin, sterile and disposable needle is inserted in the muscle at an area of increased tension called a trigger point. The trigger point is a region in the muscle where the body has responded to some form of a stressor in a spasm.

Normally, when a stressor is removed the spasm decreases but in the case of a trigger point, the spasm cycle does not turn off. The trigger point causes increased tension and tenderness in the myofascial region and can cause dysfunction.

When the needle is inserted, it disrupts the spasm cycle and resets the tissue's response in the region. A muscle twitch response is often seen in the area which presents as an involuntary contraction of the muscle.

The insertion of the needle causes other biochemical responses in the muscle but all the results and reactions lead towards releasing the tissue around the trigger point.

The release of the tissue tension also aids in the effectiveness and ability to carry out other manual techniques and soft tissue work. Dry needling can be effective and useful throughout multiple regions of the body.

Sports Screening

A pre-participation screen is an essential component of being proactive in injury prevention. Whether you are starting a sports season, an exercise program, or just want a clear picture of your strengths and weaknesses, a sports screen is a smart way of getting recommendations for corrective exercise and the steps to take to prevent future injuries.

The sports screening at Prime Sports Med RX consists of an evaluation of gait (walking and running), posture, range of motion, manual muscle testing and functional movements needed for strength training and sports.

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is also used as it has been proven to identify asymmetries in athletic movement that contribute to injuries. Prime Sports Med RX's comprehensive approach to screening gives a well-rounded look at the individual and helps prepare him or her to progress in training, sports participation, and everyday life.

Contact Prime Sports Med RX to schedule a sports screening or questions about team screenings.
